Intel says SERMA is established at retirement for eligible U.S. employees hired or rehired before January 1, 2014 who meet an Intel retirement rule. It can reimburse eligible insurance premiums until the account is exhausted.
Current public eligibility
Hire date, U.S. status and retirement eligibility all matter
Intel's U.S. retiree site says SERMA is established upon retirement for an eligible person who was hired or rehired before January 1, 2014, is a U.S. employee at retirement and meets an Intel retirement eligibility rule. The current summary plan description and personal benefit record control.
SERMA is different from SERPLUS. SERMA helps with eligible retiree insurance premiums; SERPLUS is nonqualified deferred compensation for eligible employees.
Using the account
Eligible premiums can extend beyond Intel retiree coverage
Intel lists eligible premium categories that can include individual health, dental and vision insurance, COBRA, Medicare, Medigap and long-term-care insurance, subject to the plan. SERMA can also offset eligible Intel Retiree Medical Plan premiums.
Intel notes that a new retiree's SERMA may not be available until 45 to 60 days after retirement. Keep enough cash to bridge premiums and claims while access is established.
Retirement-date planning
Price health coverage before choosing how fast to use SERMA
Compare premiums before and after Medicare, dependent coverage, COBRA and non-Intel alternatives. Using the full SERMA amount quickly can lower near-term costs but leave fewer credits later.
Review the 2026 Intel retiree guide and the full IRMP/SERMA summary plan description. Confirm eligibility in writing before relying on SERMA in a retirement budget.
